Fremont Art Association - Fine Art Show 2009
A nice first place award from our local juried fine art show...

I have several images in the Fremont Art Associations annual juried Fine Art Show.

I won the First Place in photography for my 36" image called "Olmstead Point Pine". The other image on display is "Mattole Rain".

Olmstead is a popular pull out in the Tuolumne high country near Lake Tenaya and this tree is world famous...

I seem to have captured it in a rather different perspective with the ultra wide field of view provided by the vertorama technique.

Mission Coffee Roasting - Sept 1-30
The Struggle between the grass and the concrete.

As much as I would like to report that the grass is winning I am sorry to say it is not... dang and thats my team!!!!

This is a good place to see some of my 3 foot, 4' and 6' prints in both deep wrap canvas and laminated styles.

I even offer some smaller less expensive pieces in nice custom frames from Hector at the thirdmillenniumgallery.com.

Mission Coffee Roasting hosts a show of large format high resolution panoramic photographs by Jacline Deridder and Ralph Cooksey-Talbott. Jacline Deridder has pictures of our city and its inner being that stand in counterpoint to the images of the local hills by Cooksey-Talbott.

Fremont, is there a ‘there’ there? This question is often asked…

This exhibit is a visual examination of the dichotomy between Fremont’s urban infrastructure and its natural setting of hills and flatlands. The juxtaposition exists only because of the local moratorium on building on the hills.

Without these restrictions on building the artists would not have been able to construct this rich lexicon of images of the suburban environs and the pristine rolling hills surrounding our city.

Come and see for yourself, we think there is!

Olive Hyde Members Juried Show
September 4th - October 3rd

Join me for the opening reception September 4th from 7:00-9:00pm, I will definitely be there...

Much to my suprise I was honored with a Special Merit Award for my vertorama image Green Lake Moonrise.

It is always nice to have someone else like an image that I actually like :)

Often the images that I like are too sublime although I am getting better at guessing what folks will like and what they will find to be confusing.

This image is from Green Lake in the Hoover Wilderness where I went last summer. The view is pretty much what I saw from my campsite. It is a nice place to go and I can highly recommend it for a nice mild hike without steep grades.

The picture is looking across the lake at the 800 foot thunderous torrent of West Lake falls. The rumbling roar of of the fallswas clearly audible from this side of the lake.

Hope to see you there!!!

A nice treat...
I won First in photography at the FAA Fine Arts Show.

I won the first prize in the photography catagory with a black and white 30x40" print of Mirror Lake Outlet.

This was a conversion from a 6x7cm NC160 negative so it still had plenty of resolution left at that magnification.

The print was a gallery wrapped canvas on deep bars on Lexjet Instant Dry Satin Canvas that was sprayed with Breathing Color Glamour II Giclee Varnish.

Photos at the Alameda County Fair
A largish local juried exhibition of photographs...

I entered a few images in the Alameda County Fair photo contest and came back with an Honorable Mention for my photo of a Fern at Lake Tahoe.

Since most of what I do is not traditionally framed venues that want only framed prints limit their selection from my collection.

I don't do many images with frames and plex/glass because of the poor viewing experience.

In other words, terrible reflections and loss of contrast from glare.

I don't like to look at a picture and see what is behind me... I want to see the picture.

I have been making and selling most of my prints in Lamiframes or as gallery wrapped sprayed canvas.

All framing rants aside it is nice to be noticed :)

Display at the Olive Hyde Gallery

Lost Coast Photos
A work in progress gallery of photos from the north coast

I was lucky to get a place to stay from a friend in Petrolia California this April. She has a house there that she rents out and it is beautiful, here is a link to her site Petrolia Palms.

From there I was able to access the remote Lost Coast trailhead, the Mattole river delta and have the opportunity to ride the Wildcat up to Ferndale.

Here is a work in progress gallery of some of the images that I captured on the trip.

The Return of Virtual North Beach
A photo walk I made of San Franciscos North Beach

In 1996 digital photography was still not there...

But I couldnt resist when a friend loaned me his camera. I made a few hundred pictures over the course of a day in which I carefully (sortof) walked North Beach. Then I took the pics home and wrote a map generator on mac that allowed me to build a matrix of image map linked n-way nodes.

Try it out! wave your mouse around the edges of the pictures to see which directions you can go... It is like an early Dungeons and Dragons game maze.

Photographing and Hiking in Sonora Pass
My TOPO .tpo map of the Sonora Pass with Hiking routes and Trail Head Directions

Last year I started using the National Geographic TOPO program and while I found it to be a poorly written piece of software it is usable. This map requires the California State version of the software and version 3 or greater.

I have been putting my notes, trail and trail head info into a map of the pass and you might enjoy looking at it if your are a TOPO user and are thinking of going hiking or photographing in that area.

I have included a little commentary on each hike and will revisit this document as the summer wears on...

We go to Camp Blue at the Lair for our base camp. This is is the UC Berkeley Alumni Association camp near Pinecrest Lake.
